    Jacobi Elliptic Functions and the Complete Solution to the Bead on the Hoop Problem

    Jacobi elliptic functions are flexible functions that appear in a variety of problems in physics and engineering. We introduce and describe important features of these functions and present a physical example from classical mechanics where they appear: a bead on a spinning hoop. We determine the complete analytical solution for the motion of a bead on the driven hoop for arbitrary initial conditions and parameter values.Comment: Accepted for publication in American Journal of Physics. 9 pages, 6 figure

    Incorporation of TiC particles on AlSi 4340 low alloy steel surfaces via tungsten inert gas melting

    Surface cladding utilizes a high energy input to deposit a layer on substrate surfaces providing protection against wear and corrosion. In this work, TiC particulates were incorporated by melting single tracks in powder preplaced onto AISI 4340 low alloy steel surfaces using a Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) torch with a range of processing conditions. The effects of energy input and powder content on the melt geometry, microstructure and hardness were investigated. The highest energy input (1680J/mm) under the TIG torch produced deeper (1.0 mm) and wider melt pools, associated with increased dilution, compared to that processed at the lowest energy (1008J/mm). The melt microstructure contained partially melted TiC particulates associated with dendritic, cubic and globular type carbides precipitated upon solidification of TiC dissolved in the melt; TiC accumulated more near to the melt-matrix interface and at the track edges. Addition of 0.4, 0.5 and 1.0 mg/mm2 TiC gave hardness values in the resolidified melt pools between 750 to over 1100Hv, against a base hardness of 300 Hv; hardness values are higher in tracks processed with a grcater TiC addition and reduced energy input

    An evaluation of weld metal nitrogen retention and properties in 316NL austenitic stainless steel

    A series of tests were conducted using varying levels of nitrogen and helium in a conventional argon shielding gas when welding 316LN austenitic stainless steel. The outcome was that a 15 per cent nitrogen addition to the argon shielding gas had the most significant effect on increasing the weld metal nitrogen. Subsequent additions of helium to the argon 15 per cent nitrogen shielding gas had very little overall benefit. Increasing the nitrogen content of the weld metal had the consequential effects of decreasing the ferrite content and the hardness. As a result of solid solution strengthening, the yield strength increased with increase in nitrogen content. There was an increase in impact toughness as the nitrogen content increased. This was related to the decreased ferrite content associated with the strong austenetizing potential of nitrogen. It was also shown that an almost fully austenitic weld metal could still have very good toughness. In combination with these effects there was no loss in corrosion resistance. The addition of nitrogen to a conventional argon shielding gas presents attractive cost and quality benefits over the established requirement to over alloy the weld filler material with expensive alloys such as nickel

    Contractibility and Asset Ownership: On-Board Computers and Governance in U.S. Trucking

    We investigate how the contractibility of actions affecting the value of an asset affects asset ownership. We examine this by testing how on-board computer (OBC) adoption affects truck ownership. We develop and test the proposition that adoption should lead to less ownership by drivers, particularly for hauls where drivers have the greatest incentive to drive in non-optimal ways or engage in rent-seeking behavior. We find evidence in favor: OBC adoption leads to less driver ownership, especially for long hauls and hauls that use specialized trailers. We also find that non-owner drivers with OBCs drive better than those without them. These results suggest that technology-enabled increases in contractibility may lead to less independent contracting and larger firms.

    Lessons learned in the development of the STOL intelligent tutoring system

    Lessons learned during the development of the NASA Systems Test and Operations Language (STOL) Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS), being developed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center are presented. The purpose of the intelligent tutor is to train STOL users by adapting tutoring based on inferred student strengths and weaknesses. This system has been under development for over one year and numerous lessons learned have emerged. These observations are presented in three sections, as follows. The first section addresses the methodology employed in the development of the STOL ITS and briefly presents the ITS architecture. The second presents lessons learned, in the areas of: intelligent tutor development; documentation and reporting; cost and schedule control; and tools and shells effectiveness. The third section presents recommendations which may be considered by other ITS developers, addressing: access, use and selection of subject matter experts; steps involved in ITS development; use of ITS interface design prototypes as part of knowledge engineering; and tools and shells effectiveness

    Make Versus Buy in Trucking: Asset Ownership, Job Design and Information

    Explaining patterns of asset ownership in the economy is a central goal of both organizational economics and industrial organization. We develop a model of asset ownership in trucking, which we test by examining how the adoption of different classes of on-board computers (OBCs) between 1987 and 1997 influenced whether shippers use their own trucks for hauls or contract with for-hire carriers. We find that OBCs' incentive-improving features pushed hauls toward private carriage, but their resource-allocation-improving features pushed them toward for-hire carriage. We conclude that ownership patterns in trucking reflect the importance of both incomplete contracts (Grossman and Hart (1986)) and of job design and measurement issues (Holmstrom and Milgrom (1994)).
